The objective of clinical psychology is to allow patients to stop, reduce or deal with their psychic suffering. Collaboration with mental health specialists (such as psychiatrists) is a must when one suffers from mental illness (such as addiction, depressions, psychosis, etc.)

Clinician have to understand the psychological and psychopathological functioning of patients and of their family members in order to provide the patients with appropriate solutions: assessment, guidance (social, psychiatric, psychotherapeutic), follow-up, psychotherapy, etc…

Clinical psychology also intervenes with symptomatic behavior and deals with children, teenagers, adults and the elderly whose life aspects (social, familial, etc.) are affected.

The mission of SESOBEL’s clinical psychologists is to ensure following-up patients with disability and their families. Offering them counseling and psychotherapy sessions will make way for actions of support and for changing their sufferance into possible dreams or projects.

The Psychology unit targets all children with disability and their families.

The most encountered problems are related to handicap denial or acceptance, psychiatric illnesses (depression, psychosis, addiction, etc.), abuse (mistreatment, violence, neglect), behavioral malfunctioning, figuring out one’s place among a family or residential-institution members, traumas when chirurgical intervention is needed, etc.

In collaboration with the rest of the multidisciplinary team, SESOBEL’s Psychology unit ensures assessment, guidance and support for youth and their families.

Along with the pedagogic team and the technical one, the unit contributes to elaborating life plans for the children with disability, a plan which meets their needs and desires  in order to direct their potentials.

1- Assessment

Assessment is made after clinical sessions that might include a group of cognitive, emotional and psychiatric tests (such as K-ABC, CAT and drawing personage or family) and psychiatric evaluation (DSM V).

Assessment helps to identify present psychological problems and to determine clinical diagnosis and possible prognoses. It allows psychologists and the multidisciplinary team to devise life and care plans that meet patients' needs.

Once this step is achieved, patients and their families are oriented according to the plan previously agreed upon by the multidisciplinary team. It can propose psychiatric consultations, psychological follow-ups, etc.

2- Psychiatric consultations

With psychiatrists, we coordinate things regarding the history, problems, and psychological and behavioral malfunctioning of any youth in difficulty.

Once diagnosis is established, medical treatment is proposed if needed, and monitoring is ensured.

3- Psychotherapeutic treatment and guidance

Two approaches are applied: Integrative psychotherapy and EMDR

-Integrative psychotherapy adopts different psychology schools (psychodynamic, cognitive and behavioral therapies, etc.)to best provide patients’ interest. This approach is the most used because it is the first to respond to the patients’ needs.

-EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) is brief therapy used especially for patients with traumas. It depends on bilateral stimulation of the brain and aims at overcoming traumatic memories.

Psychological sessions following a supportive approach are meant for children and youth with disability. Psychotherapy could be conducted individually or in groups.

The Psychology unit also addresses suffering patients’ families. It proposes counseling, support, psychological and/or psychiatric orientation, and psychological group therapy that applies themes co-directed by the Social Department/Program
