Relaxation is a sparkle of youth

According to the 2007 version of ISO 9999, technical aid is “any product (including devices, equipment, instruments and software) especially produced or generally available, for persons with disability. Technical aids prevent, compensate for, monitor, relieve or neutralize impairments, activity limitations and participation restrictions.”

SESOBEL’s Technical-Aid unit intervenes with children and youth with physical disability, who face difficulties as to:

* Maintaining sitting, standing, or lying-down position

* Undertaking everyday tasks like eating, drinking, washing hands, bathing, getting dressed, communicating, writing, etc.

* Maintaining good positioning, the lack of which might lead to orthopedic deformities

* Moving from one place to another

The unit’s goal is to provide these children and youth with assistance and artificial means that contribute to optimizing their functional autonomy, alleviating their disability, as well as improving their life quality and promoting their social inclusion.

The services are mainly provided by a multidisciplinary team consisting of physiotherapists, occupational therapists, technicians (carpenters, electronics technicians, etc.) who collaborate with external colleagues such as prosthetics & orthotics technicians, different technicians and sales agents with specialized equipment, etc.

The Technical-Aid unit’s scope of action

Positioning

Activities of Daily Living (ADL)

Setting living areas for the person with disability

1- Positioning

It includes sitting, standing and lying-down positioning.

A-Seating positioning

The mission of SESOBEL’s Seating Positioning Clinic is to ensure that the person with a physical disability maintains symmetrical, stable, functional, comfortable, secure and graceful position.

Applying positioning techniques, the Technical-Aid unit seeks to:

- Correct inappropriate bone setting and prevent orthopedic deformations

- Prevent skin problems (redness, pressure ulcers, etc.)

- Facilitate upper-limb movement

- Improve alertness and communication for better social inclusion

The Seating Positioning Clinic conducts:

Assessment, which is based upon:

            - Meeting families of the person with disability to collect information related to their living conditions

            - Conducting clinical examination to identify and analyze problems related to the postural inability of the person with disability

            - Planning and designing positioning means that will fulfill specific needs of the person with disability

Execution includes measurements, manufacturing technical aids (assistive products), fitting and adjustments.

Delivery consists of providing technical aids to the persons with disability and teaching them the use, care and storage processes.

Follow-up includes inspection, care and repair of technical aids.

B-Standing positioning

The standing positioning is one stage of the normal psychomotor development of the person with disability.

It is a crucial stage between ground movements and walking. This step is essential and should therefore be recommended to non-walking children.

Applying the standing position, the Technical-Aid unit aims to:

- Boost bone growth and prevent osteoporosis

- Prevent orthopedic problems and maintain good postoperative result

- Improve organ functions (cardiac, respiratory, digestive, etc.)

That’s why SESOBEL’s means include standard or tailor-made sit-to-stand lifts (supine or prone decubitus).

C-The lying-down positioning

The lying-down positioning aims at:

-Preventing orthopedic problems

-Maintaining good postoperative results

-Ensuring comfort

That’s why SESOBEL’s means include tailor-made sleeping postures.

2- Activities of Daily Living (ADL)

People with cerebral palsy or neurodegenerative illness have limited functional capacities that render any routine daily activity difficult and sometimes even make it impossible.

Thus, SESOBEL’s Technical-Aid unit offers children and youth a wide range of artificial means, allowing them to execute their routine daily tasks and have access to the surrounding environment.

Suggested types of technical aids:

Mobility-assistive products such as wheelchairs, K. Walkers, different types of canes, etc.

Postural assistive products such as devices placed on any kind of base, whether mobile or not, like adjustable seats, customized cushions, sit-to-stand lifts, sleeping postures, etc.

Assistive products for personal hygiene and care, bath and dressing up, such as adaptable toothbrushes, bath and toilet seats, support bars, changing tables, anti-slip material, button hooks, etc.

Alimentary-assistive products, such as adaptive utensils, curved spoons, plate guards, indented drinking glass, etc.

Assistive products for design and communication, such as needle designators, communication boards, inclined tables, adaptable pencils and scissors, computers with specialized peripheries and software, etc.

Assistive products for leisure purposes, such as adaptable bicycles, computer games, etc.

3- Setting living areas for the person with disability

Setting special living areas for persons with disability while taking care of them is very important.

SESOBEL’s Technical-Aid unit modifies spaces (home or workplace) where children and youth are often found in order to ensure accessibility and facilitate their daily activities.

Providing care means:

-Visiting residence (centre, home, workplace), which includes:

            - Meeting beneficiaries and their families or caregivers to collect information related to the life conditions

            - Exploring the residence of the persons with disability to define architectural obstacles hampering their autonomy

            - Studying the cases of the persons with disability and identifying their needs

            - Planning as well as selecting optimal solutions in accordance with a technical and budgetary perspective

-Execution: includes measurements, manufacture of technical aids, fitting and adjustments

-Delivery: consists of installing technical aids or providing the persons with disability with them, then instructing them on the use, care and storage processes

-Follow-up: includes inspection, care and repair of technical-aids

The means used at SESOBEL might be tailor-made or available assisted products.
